Dana & HorseMexican HorseThere is a funny story to go along with this photo. Robert Scott Hooper was photographing Dana in Sayulita, Mexico, which, at the time was nothing more than a fishing village with 3 miles of pristine beach and a few "gringo" houses, when he decided he wanted to do a shot of her with a horse. She was quite a horsewoman, good enough to do some rodeo competition, so he felt it fit her. We asked the village elders if they knew of any available and attractive horses and everyone took the request quite seriously and went searching for the best horse. They even had a kind of contest of horses, but the best they could come up with was this small, tame horse. So Hooper shot Dana on the beach all day, washing the horse, riding it, and laying on it while the sun went down. The next day we were scheduled to fly back to the states in the afternoon and were loading up in front of our friends casa on the beach when we saw the most beautiful black stallion coming down the beach. On it was a rider dressed in a costume of all black and silver, like a goucho and as they got closer we realized they were dancing and prancing like they were right out of a show. It turns out the rider got the message, too late, that we were looking for a magnificent horse to photograph and his was really the best in the country. With travel already scheduled, Hooper never got the chance to shoot Dana on that beautiful show horse. Dana & Horse Taken on Location at Sayulita, Mexico Shot 1983 |
